Need help wrangling your Photos? Let’s talk! Merge through iCloud PhotosĪpple’s iCloud Photos service offers the best solution for merging libraries. You have three options: merging through iCloud Photos, using the PowerPhotos utility, and merging by exporting and importing. Be aware that the process is slow, can require a lot of disk space, and may result in the loss of some metadata. If you want to consolidate multiple Photos libraries, the good news is you can merge them. But too much separation is annoying - you have to keep switching between libraries, and it’s easy to import new photos into the wrong one. For instance, an interior designer might want to keep personal photos separate from photos taken for work. That’s good when photos need to be kept completely separate.

Has anyone faced similar issues? If so, do you have any advice on how to fix it? Thanks for reading if you got this far, I know that was a lot of info.Photos makes it easy to create and switch between libraries. Keep the old and new libraries separate and maintain the correct sequence in each Merge the two libraries with PowerPhotos, and accept that the last ~15 months of photos show in a non-sequential order

Keep my current library as-is, where 15 years of my old photos are in a completely random order whenever I open the default "All Photos" album on my Mac or iPhone In summary I am left with three less than ideal options: In my case, file creation date is a meaningless attribute given all the photos were "recreated" on my SSD from iCloud on the same date in 2017. I think that when PowerPhotos is merging my libraries, it accurately separates each Photos import event and then sorts the photos within each event by file creation date to determine the order to add into the library. In doing so, the actual JPG files in the library were recreated on my hard drive with new Date Added, Created, and Modified attributes. Events or trips are mostly grouped together, but the order of the photos within a particular import event are not sorted correctly.īefore attempting to merge libraries, I had to turn off iCloud Photo Sharing and select the option to store all original copies on my hard drive. It scrubs duplicates from my current library when merging into the old backup, but in the merged library the new photos (October 2015 onward) are not in the correct sequence. PowerPhotos is a great tool and it comes really close to fixing my problem. I started to look for a solution to merge my current library with the old backup and purchased Fat Cat Software's PowerPhotos, hoping that it would do the trick. The other day I found a backup of my Photos library from just before the iCloud incident (!!!). From November 2015 through the end of 2016 I continued to use this library and all of the new photos I added remain ordered in the correct sequence.

But now the "All Photos" album is essentially useless for those 15 years of photos. At the time I didn't understand the consequences of this incident because I thought, at least I can sort using the Moments view. I'm still not quite sure what happened but it was definitely caused by pausing the iCloud upload. During the upload process my wifi was disconnected and the sequence of the photos in my Photos library was forever altered and randomized. Eventually I ran out of space on my SSD and in October 2015, I turned on iCloud Photo Sharing. When iPhoto was replaced in 2015, I migrated my library to Photos with no issues.

I switched from PC to Mac in 2014 and imported all of my photos dating from 2000-2014 into iPhoto. If anyone knows how to merge two Photos libraries together while maintaining the sequence of photos in the "All Photos" albums, please let me know. TLDR: Mac Photos and iCloud turn simple file management processes into extremely frustrating, time consuming headaches with no known solutions. I'll try to keep this as brief as possible but there are a lot of details to the story.

As a long time PC user, 3 years after switching to Mac I'm still amazed at how complicated simple file management tasks can be, and how Apple's own software often creates situations where the lack of user control over basic features (in this case, not allowing "All Photos" to sort by photo date instead of import date, or not natively supporting merging of Photos libraries) causes huge problems. I'm hoping someone can help to resolve my headaches around the Mac Photos app, the order of photos in my library's "All Photos" album, and attempting to merge two libraries with Fat Cat Software PowerPhotos.
